What is Column Formwork?
Column formwork is a type of concrete formwork. Concrete formwork is a mold made of steel, aluminum, timber, plastic, or other materials in which wet concrete is poured to achieve a desired shape and size for construction. Once the concrete sets, formwork is often removed, although permanent formwork that remains a part of construction exists as well. Column formwork is a vertical mold in the shape of a column, as its name implies. Column formwork may either be box-shaped or round.
Column formwork is shaped and sized to the needs of a project. In order to help facilitate quality control during the pouring stage of using column formwork, clamps, which are horizontal and made of either steel or timber are often used in conjunction with column molds. Column formwork’s head is frequently employed to support beam formwork, or column formwork is cast to the bottom side of beams. The use of column formwork in conjunction with beam formwork allows for quick and precise construction.

Once the concrete sets in column formwork, it is necessary that it is thoroughly inspected to ensure it meets the necessary standards of the project in terms of factors such as appearance and strength. As concrete is being poured, column formwork is often bolstered with the help of falsework. Falsework includes poles or other stabilizing elements that keep the column formwork in place until the concrete dries.
Price of Column Formwork
Column formwork can be purchased either new or used. Average prices for new column formwork range between around $60 to $150 per square meter of materials. These prices apply to plastic, steel, and aluminum formwork. Prices are fairly consistent regardless of the materials used. At times, timber formwork can be a little less expensive, but it’s also less likely to retain its value and ability to be re-used and/or sold after use. In terms of resale, column formwork retains its value as long as it’s in good condition. Once temporary column formwork is no longer needed for a particular project, it can be re-used for another project or sold to buyers who are looking to cut costs and purchase formwork used. Sometimes column formwork is sold with falsework, access equipment such as ladders, and guard rails. This will increase the price, but these add-ons can be very helpful.
Overall, column formwork can be an indispensable addition to construction projects that require the creation of columns. Whether column formwork is bought new or used, it often practically “pays for itself” in terms of the value it adds to a project and due to its resale value.
